Four Square THOO

THOO was born from the collaboration between an Italian master perfumer and manufacturer of Oud in Jakarta. This is a story of friendship between two virtuosos who gave birth to valuable perfume creations…Created for lovers of perfume, the fragrances blend together the tradition and the know-how of distillation of essential oils to choose the ingredients. The fragrances are uniquely combined, with a particular process of infusion and maceration.”

HOUSE: The House of Oud
FRAGRANCE: Each Other, Just Before, Wind Heat, Wonderly
SIZE/COST: 75ml / $220 (7ml size also available)
SPECIAL THANKS: Maison Duquesne

Each Other: A wondrous blend of commingling citrus and peppery warm florals. It’s a little green, a little bitter and a whole lot of elegant finesse. If I were to suggest a setting I’d imagine this to be both airy and marine-like, but that calm before the storm when your senses tingle with pops of herbaceous haze in the wind. This is wholly understated, a skin scent that is calm and collected. (2018, 87%)

Nose: Cristian Calabro and Andrea Casotti
Notes: Citruses, Pink Pepper, Grapefruit, Wormwood, Calamus, Coriander, Vetiver, Ambergris, Labdanum

Just Before: Spiced citrus like pin-point cast sunbeams of amber light. This makes me think of a Mediterranean beach at the tip of nowhere. Juicy fruit mix well with vanilla and refined woody hues in a mesmerizing way. I’m getting the impression of orchids, that graceful dangle, that obscure bleeding of color. It’s soft and delights with an accord that comes in somewhere between anise and powdered donuts, and they are nowhere in the recipe. Cozy and temperate, this is a perfume for the laidback set. Nose: Maurizio Cerizza
Notes: Saffron, Lemon, Bergamot, Palo Santo, Ylang-Ylang, Myrrh, Vanilla, Sandalwood, Benzoin, Amber

Wind Heat: So clean and bright. It’s like a giant bath filled with a tea sachet made of the finest small florals. Among them the peony is what stands out to me, and this is a note I do not often really detect in perfume, it rather becomes generic, but anyone who has grown these lovelies knows its gentle caress and proud aromatic properties. Another quite open perfume, however a bit bolder than the others in this spotlight thus far. It’s got a soft surface, but an able sillage, one that will entice those within a dozen feet or less. This is not for me personally, but I find it lovely nonetheless. What sets this apart is its blushing musk trail that is shrouded in a dappled warmth that is altogether splendid. (2016, 83%)

Nose: Andrea Casotti
Notes: Pink Pepper, Peony, Freesia, Rose, Suede, Musk

Wonderly: The House of Oud is so inventive and for me, this has some in common with Just Before which was observed above. It is reserved, yet has its own purring charisma. I’m going to say this is 75% gourmand and the rest is left up to interpretation as the almond accord and fruits have me at table side, a healthy appetizer ‘just before’ dining. There is something quite lavish going on here, a true sumptuous spread of delicacies. I’m getting cherries and a soft floral bouquet that reminds me some of champagne. Of course, as in many of their multileveled compositions this changes scenes with the woody warmth of vanilla bean. The plume is snuggly fixated, delivering a perky glow. (2017, 84%)

Nose: Andrea Casotti
Notes: Apricot, Goji Berries, Almond Blossom, Jasmine Sambac, Neroli, Sandalwood, Madagascar Vanilla, Musk, Myrrh, Italian Iris, Virginia Cedar, Incense
